You’ve probably heard both terms: Persian and Farsi. But is there a difference? Should we say one over the other?
Let’s break it down.
Farsi is simply the Persian word for the Persian language—just like “Deutsch” is the German word for German. It’s what native speakers call their language inside Iran. But in English and most other Western languages, the correct term is Persian.
Why?
The Academy of Persian Language and Literature has recommended that Farsi not be used in foreign languages. Instead, they advise using Persian, which has deep historical roots in Western literature and academic contexts.
"Persian" reflects the rich cultural, literary, and national identity of Iran in a way that “Farsi” doesn’t convey as fully.
For comparison, think about this:
◼ We don’t say “Deutsch” when speaking English—we say “German.”
◼ Similarly, in English, we say Persian.
◼ In Spanish: Persa.
◼ In French: Persan.
So if you’re speaking English, go with Persian. It honors the history, beauty, and global recognition of the language.
