Key Points About Learning the Persian Alphabet and Reading Proficiency

  • Recognizing the alphabet is just the first step. Knowing the letters doesn’t automatically make you a good reader. For example, even if you know all the letters in the word “eight,” you might not pronounce or understand it correctly without context and practice.

  • Reading proficiency requires context and exposure. To become a fluent reader, you need to see words in different contexts and practice reading regularly. Depending on your current Persian level, I provide:

    • Educational materials designed specifically for learning purposes.

    • Original materials like news articles, stories, and poems, which were not created for language learning but help you engage with authentic Persian texts.

  • Written and spoken Persian differ significantly. For instance:

    • Written/formal: ایران سی‌و‌یک استان دارد. (Phonetics: /irān si-o-yek ostān dārad/)

    • Spoken: ایران سی‌و‌یک استان داره. (Phonetics: /iran so-o-yek ostān dāre/)

ِYou see the difference? This is a simple example. In more complex cases, like news articles or literary texts, the differences require intensive reading and knowledge of Persian grammar. However, this is manageable—my other students have succeeded, and I’m confident you can too, janam.

  • Learning Persian poetry requires dedication. If you’re interested in reading the works of Hafez, Rumi, and others, or even contemporary peoms life works of Sohrab Sepehri, Forugh Farrokhzad, you’ll need to learn new words and structures. This requires additional commitment, which we can discuss before starting. I don't teach Persian Literature, but I can help you with reading and pronunciation.

  • Reading is more than decoding letters. You can’t effectively read a text if you don’t understand its context or subject matter. My approach focuses on helping you not only read and pronounce words correctly but also:

    • Learn new vocabulary.

    • Improve reading speed. (you can't read fast when you don't know what you're reading)

    • Understand the meaning of texts through contextual learning.

  • Writing and typing included. I teach you how to write by hand and type on both computers and phones, so you’ll have no worries about adapting to various formats.

This comprehensive strategy ensures that you’re not just recognizing letters but truly becoming a skilled and confident reader in Persian.
